    Spent Most of Last Night Working On a Cover letter and resume for someone who needed to get it in by a certain time today. It was given to me late in the day and since I had to review their resume and edit it, too, I was up most of the night with this until I finally had the Cover Letter like I wanted. It came out pretty good and I know she is happy so I guess that is what counts. Let's hope you all get hired for Christmas! Paul

    Paul the miracle worker. Your office isn't on 34th street is it? Okay, lame joke. I'm glad it's still possible to land a good job even in a recession. I have question though, all of these so-ed experts have all these opinions on what makes a good resume and it seems to vary, how do you decide how to edit a resume and cover letter that appelas to all?

    How Do I Decide? The best way to know if you are doing something correctly is by the reaction of the Resume Reader/HA. Since I've been in the Executive Search business since 1980, I've seen enough reactions to know what it takes to get the attention of a client in the most effective manner. So all other 'ways' of doing things becomes irrelevant. A Cover Letter is a cookie cutter job- it needs to stick to a basic formula I've covered here, repeatedly. Done in this manner, it will 'work' every time. Just about Guaranteed. It better, my getting a recruitment fee depends on it. Same with Resumes- they either are immediately effective or they are not. You get enough blah responses and you eventually learn what it takes to present a resume that is immediately eye catching. We've covered those points here, several times. One of the advantages I've had is that although you all have, generally speaking, only one or two periods where you are finding out what seems to work for you, I do this every day. So, over a period of time, I cover more ground than anyone here, over and over again. So we get a better idea, faster, of what it takes to make for a 'winning'/'effective' resume. Again, we better because our getting a recruitment fee depends on it. If a spazz crooter does not want to learn, that spazz crooter will not earn a fee. And, similarly, if anyone here is sending out a resume that is not written in a fashion designed to show them off to their best, they don't get interviews. You guys find out slower what is not working for you, we find out faster. So we settle into a routine of doing something effectively each time. People here can go for months before they find out or figure out their resume is not working for them. For example, many of the people here who have asked me to look at and help them redesign their resumes have told me later their back counts get better after I give them some tips and suggestions. So, it is back to our being in the business of what everyone else here does on an occasional basis. Our learning curve is much more accelerated than the people in the working pool.

    That makes sense, constant exposure. I think the problem most job seekers face is that most of us are not in sales and marketing and therefore don't know how to make it a sales pitch without making it look like an ad. If that assessment is correct or makes sense. I have been told before that you want to list accomplishments as well as skills, does that work or is it overkill?

    It Is Shocking You Need To Ask, Icelus. The 'old school' resume was a "job description oriented" resume. It describes what you do each day. But is has no competitive value since if we had a stack of such resumes, how in the world would the HA know one from the other just by looking at them? So, the "accomplishment oriented" resumes are preferable and the norm now since they are a venue for showing off what the person did beyond 'just coming to work each day'. Those who find/invent innovative ways to get their work done in a more efficient manner that invariably leads to cost cutting is a preferable resume to one that only remarks on the duties of that person. So, yes, people who indicate a percent of change that equals a dollar amount for each of their accomplishments have a winning edge. Broadly stated, we this Process Improvement, a latest buzzword that will work into the next century since it describes people who show initiative.

    As you yourself said Paul, We do not deal with this stuff on the day to day basis you do. The time the average person spends in the job market is not nearly enough time to give them the scope that you have, which is why people ask what may seem like dumb questions to you.
