cross country job search question I want to move across the country to san diego but it seems employers are giving me a cold shoulder because I am still working on the east coast as listed on my resume. Any advice on landing a job on the west coast when you are currently living on the east??

I hope you consider ... ... the fact that by moving, you will be ineligible for unemployment in both your current state and CA. I'd wait awhile as the job situation out here is no better than anywhere else. Still you might look into companies that have locations on both coasts. Perhaps you could get hired there and transfer as the economy picks up.

When the economy picks up.... ... are employers more likely to consider a person moving from the east coast? I'm an engineer so I was looking to move to San Diego to get a better salary, the only downside to waiting for the economy to pick us is all the waiting. Plus the winters here are miserable.

Electrical Engineer I'm an EE and have been working as a Project Engineer for a machine manufacturer for the last 3 years. The defense contractors in San Diego have always been something to look forward to. But any manufacturing company would be a great fit for my skills.

QUALCOMM Thanks. I have my resume on all the big SD firms like Qualcomm and Via Sat but its always good to be able to someone and talk to them instead of your resume sitting on the website with no kind of feedback. Thats why I say its nice when people say no, just because you have an answer and are not having false hopes.

I worked in tech pubs for the software side, so not much help to you, BUT, I have listed as my HR contact a guy by the name of Greg Dugan. He was always helpful when I had questions after I quit, so might want to send him your resume, and see if he'll forward it through to the proper channels.

Recruiter Thanks for the info, found him on LinkedIn. Going to try to send him a message. Recruiters are helpful but I wonder if in this economy employers are willing to pay the fees for someone to find them an employee.

I'm trying to move as well Have you tried putting 'San Diego, CA' on your resume when applying? I would do that. If they are interested in you, you can arrange for an interview by phone or by video-teleconference. When they ask why you want to move, tell them that everyone you know lives in SD. Do not tell them you want to escape northeastern winters! You intend on moving there - and hope to find a job. Across the board, salaries are lower in SD because of its proximity to Mexico. A lot of Californians live in cheaper Mexico and cross the border to go to work. You might find that the cost of living is cheaper, however. No discrimination exists at all for those smart northeastern peeps with their strong work ethics and funny way of talking. Some companies just prefer local candidates.

More money in North County and lawyers pay well, too. Utilities and most food items are going to be cheaper, especially if you buy veggies at Henry's. I know everyone wants to live at the beach, but housing in North Park and Normal Heights is still fairly reasonable; both are close to downtown, and off two major freeways giving you access to all directions. I worked with a recruiter, Jonathan Perelli, for years and I see now he has his own shop. Kyra at Eastridge was also very good at getting me temp jobs once upon a time. Can try both of them to see if they can give you any insight into your job search.

Probably O-Side I do want to live at the beach in Encinitas, but most likely will end up in Oceanside or Carlsbad to save some money when I first move. Living up there would help since I will probably try to get a job in Carlsbad, Vista, San Marcos, or Escondido as there are a lot of manufacturers around there. It would be nice living closer for SD with all those big companies around but it does not look like they are hiring.

Traffic is problematic everywhere during rush hour, but the further north you go, it seems worse because the East/West roads are very limited, so everyone has to go North and South to get anywhere they want to go. At least most employers are aware of this and allow flexible hours; QCOM let me work 10 to 7, but even then, I had to sit for 30 minutes on the 805 south. Your job search will mostly be in what they The Golden Triangle, and Oceanside will be about a 20 minute drive without traffic. I left 4 years ago, and biopharm and life sciences are still going strong, but also lots of gov't contractors who should be ready to hire something soon since we are increasing troops in Afghanistan and will need a lot of what they build. I worked for a lot of engineers, but never electrical. Have you made a list of your target companies? Sent letters simply asking for information, rather than a job? That's what I did here (after I moved); got no responses, but I'm in the South, and they aren't taking too kindly to this old Yank turned California girl. I'm still working on that guy's name. I know it's Alan and that he had his own firm. Don't know if he's still around or laid himself off.

Cold s... For most of the companies I gave a cold and they asked me to send it my resume before I talk to anyone. This type of approach along with posting my resume on the big name's websites has gotten me nowhere. When I go out to visit I am shocked every time I see the 5 with that amount of traffic. Luckily I am an early riser and would be able to hit the road early. I know of some people that go from Encinitas to National City. Now that is quite the commute. I still get a laugh when I see the traffic lights to get on the freeway. I spoke to someone about the Afghanistan situation and they stated the same thing, those companies are going to step up production to help prevent more deaths over there. That is why I still have a hope of getting a job as listing on defense companies are always full. I believe I am a good candidate for a lot of these places but am discouraged when I don't get a response for months. Can you tell me more about The Golden Triangle? I have not heard this term while I have been there. Thanks.

Do you have a map? Look for the 805 and the 5 going N/S, then the 52 going E/W. It forms a triangle and most of these places you want to work are going to be located somewhere in there, and all parts north as many larger businesses also set up shop in Del Mar about 7-8 years ago. It's all growing, and I left in 2006 to go to the Bay Area, so could be even further north by now. Has to be some stuff in Oceanside since Pendleton is up there; not sure what they did at Miramar; moved someone/something out years ago, but can't remember the plan. I'm not talking about a real cold , just a simple letter asking for advice on your next step, job growth in the area, anything and everything except asking for a job or a review of your resume.

See it now. Thanks for the explanation. I will try to use Google maps to find places in this triangle in the future. No I haven't done that. That is some pretty good advice. I am going to try that. Would you recommend using snail mail?

Yeah, snail mail is still good for something!! It's an inverted way of peaking their interest, and stroking their ego since they get to feel special by offering advice.

Me? There's no way I'd want to move to SD! LOL! I think you meant this for the OP. That's okay, I think Sercosp got it! I would like to move...pretty much anywhere...except for anywhere in California. If I can avoid certain places in the SE, that would be nice as well. I guess one's preference depends on your personal preferences and situation.

Why not? SoCal is the place to be.. Its very laid back with nice people and the weather is never a surprise when you get of the plane. And the only thing to worry about is the fires once in a while, and getting in the way of a surfer's wave.

Great places are subjective I'm single so the quality of my friendships are more important to me than if I were attached. I don't belong in CA and niether do any of my friends that live in CA. LOL - we all agree on this. If I were married and had my own 'team', my optimal place to live might be different. I'd have more options. Another big, huge reason (again, for me personally) is that I don't like car towns. If you have a spouse/team, like laid back and nice weather, why aren't you considering Honolulu, Oahu? Maui?

Hawai'i Funny you mention this. One of my friend's dad lives on the big island and wants everyone to visit. The jobs opportunities out there stink. If I wouldn't mind working non-technical jobs then I can see Hawaii as an attractive option. I really enjoy manufacturing and I doubt anything outside of Ukulele's, coconut syrup, and surfboards being made in Hawaii and shipped out.

Big Island is s-s-s-l-l-o-o-o-w-w-w-w Great place to go nuts. There's a LOT of military contractors in HI. I don't know how you find out about who's got what open, though. There's a large data center in Maui (which is very slow as well.) See what those rat bastards, Booz, Allen, Hamilton, have on offer. Boeing might have some work out there. Aside from military contracts, the only other work is selling t-shirts to tourists. Its cheaper and the weather is even better than SD. If you're single however, you will go insane there. Except for extreme sports, there's very, very little to do. LOL - I'll bet your friends dad wants everybody to visit! I'm glad you started this thread. I might take a peek at SD! Blast! I don't have any friends with a couch I can crash on in SD. (:0| My friends stretch as far as LA (they have relo'd out of SF for jobs or job opportunities).

Many singles in San Diego We singles learned to spot each other quickly and formed new families since we were all in the same boat. San Diego is really just a bunch of neighborhoods that are all self-sustaining. Only need a car to go to the mall and the beach; for all but 3 of my 20 years, had a 10 minute commute to work downtown, and then 20 minutes when I worked up in the Golden Triangle. California is filled with normal people, so you'd fit in more than you think. Just have to learn where the "beautiful people" live and play, regardless of what town you're in. Have the same deal here in North Carolina, and quite frankly, I met more kooks here in one year than I did out there in 22.
