Hard to tell if they are lies are not. A lot of time the clients string the recruiters along. We don't get paid to "string you along." We don't interview "for fun."

Motivation not necessary... Some companies are just disorganized. Some have HR departments that suck, or inept hiring managers. Disagreements between people over who to interview or not... Sometimes they really don't know what they are looking for -- job descriptions change... Sometimes budget problems put positions on infinite hold. But that doesn't mean that some people won't shuffle along as if it weren't the case. And that often leads to delays. Its one of those "don't ascribe to malice" things... when stupidity or ineptness is an adequate explanation...

It's mostly because these employers are shaking in their boots, stressing over their bottom line and the uncertain future they face from horrific mismanagement. Efficiently run organizations know what they can and can't handle for their labor needs. LABOR = Production, according to product demand & value in the market.

Does not end with prospective employees I had a company who, when taking me into a permanent position from nearly four months as a temp, required me to take a physical and drug screen after working a full 8+ hours on Graveyard Shift, with no prior notice. I showed up the day after (simply because I did not see the date of the appointment on the referral slip). I suspected it was more than just a routine Physical and Drug Screen, which I did submit to, and, I was right, they wanted a Physical Performance AND Stress Analysis Test (which I did refuse). The HR TROLL said that I would be fired for insubordination, Wrong!!!! Employers can not, or, should not be authorized to require ANY physical Performance, not specifiy job related, on Personal time, without compensation (Which was true in this case). I did walk away with my had held high, because, this was obviously an employer that would be unreasonable toward ALL employee issues. The company was Pacific Coast Industries, A parts producer for NUMMI (American Toyota Assembly Operation - who's parts represent serious quality issues that were practiced to save on material costs ON FUEL/BRAKE/EMISSION CONTROL LINES AND ABS DUCTING INSIDE THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT). DON'T BUY TOYOTAS!!!!

In summary, they just don't care Potential employers do the fore mentioned because they just don't care. They don't care if you're unemployed and have taken the time to meet with them. They don't care if your taking the time to meet with them meant that you had to make adjustments to anything else you may have planned for the day. I had a scheduled interview and when I showed up to sign in at the security desk, another applicant signed in at the same time and had a scheduled meeting with the same person at the same time. I was then told to come back tomorrow because the manager had made a mistake, double booked for the day and rescheduled me for tomorrow. No appologies. Do you think I showed up the next day? In another interview, I waited in the lobby for 45 minutes only to find out that everyone was in a meeting and asked to reschedule. What do you think I did? In one other interview, I was scheduled to meet with a person at 8:00 AM. I bussed and trained myself into the city only to have an interview meeting last less than 10 minutes because they thought I wouldn't be able to work the suggested work schedule.

Excellent article... And it couldn't be more true - Except for the part where it claims that candidates have options. Not very damned many right now. Employers really can get away with this crap right now because what are people going to do? And it doesn't look like things will swing back the other way any time soon.

The New York Times had an article last month in the business section, reminding employers that applicants are also customers. If a company is treating people poorly in their hiring practices, they leave a poor impression of the company in general and the word gets around.
