I'm thinking about starting over... ...in my late thirties. I was laid off from my Buyer job in August of '08 and basiy been working part time or temping since, alternating with UI. I've been on countless interviews for other jobs in the Supply Chain field, but I realize as the past gets further away, the chances of landing a similar gig in that field is getting slimmer by the day. I have few assets (a used car) and I recently moved back into my retired folks' basement; I'm single and unattached. I figured I have little to lose at this point, so I should just chuck it all and go for a completely different career, maybe as a screenwriter (yes, I know the long odds). I'll also consider other career paths, since I have varied interests. The point is, have others accomplished or know others who went about with a complete career and life overhaul? Success stories?

yup, i completely reinvented myself 2 years ago, after my last IT gig, i decided i was done with corporate politics, and dealing with morons everyday, no matter what i was making ($120/hr at the time) I decided to reinvent myself in every aspect. I moved from Boston to NYC, and started 3 businesses (2 internet, and 1 brick-and-mortar service business). I do side gigs, and scrap and scrape, to pay the bills. I live in a 200 sq ft apartment. But i've never been happier. I wake up each morning and pinch myself. I control my own destiny. If i have some wacky idea to increase sales, i can put my money where my smart-ass mouth is, and win or lose on my own, without having to run it by some idiot-ship committee of lackeys. If your dream is to be a screenwriter, go for it, or you will always regret it. Mix it in with some common sense too. Work side gigs so you dont go into debt. And even if you dont make it as a screenwriter, there are other things in the industry that arent as glamorous, but will still leave you happy. A chick i've been banging in NYC failed as an actress, but got to know the industry well enough that she is now a producer. So while her ultimate dream didnt pan out, she is still happy as a clam not to be working a 9 to 5 cubicle job. Go for it, and good luck!

Our lives sound very similar Who thought at this point in our lives that we would be scrambling to find a new career or anyone that will hire us to do anything? It's easy to get some new education, but without experience, it's like you don't exist at all. I feel people in prison have it better off than us. There are all kinds of programs to help them get employed and settled when they get released, but people like us get thrown to the wolves.

I know they have access to more programs than the regular person on the street. In fact, some of them are coming out with more work experience than those on the outside. It's like the same with recovering drug addicts. Tons of programs to help them get on their feet. But, what about people like me and Theseus who didn't serve time or develop an addiction. We went down the right path, but nobody's trying to help us out or pat us on the back. The UE office is no help at all to any regular person. Just full of deadbeat clockwatchers that roll their eyes when you ask them about retraining programs.
