What am I doing wrong? I recently retired from the US Air Force after 20 years of service as a public affairs officer (PR manager) and I am trying to begin a civilian career. I have a bachelor of science degree in management and associate of science in public affairs, in addition to tons of technical training and experience. I have been networking as much as I can, sending out hundreds of resumes, registering with temporary agencies, following up with prospective employers, doing mock interviews, researching companies and basiy doing anything and everything I can to land a job. At the end of this month, I will have been looking for a year. I was making more than $65K per year in the Air Force, but now I'm willing to work for anything over $30K. (My wife only has a professional certificate in secretarial skills, and she makes more than $50K per year.) We live in Denver. As far as I can tell - I am following every piece of advice from the "job experts," but I am not achieving any results. Is it the lousy economy, or is my military experience somehow handicapping me?

It sounds like you are doing just about everything that you should be doing and also what everyone else is doing. If you are not getting any interview requests, it is probably fair to say that your resume needs some revising. In terms of what you are experiencing, it is the economy for certain and the fact that there are a lot of people in the same boat and employers are being picky, because they can be. It is an employer's market right now. What types of positions or work are you looking for?

I would love to have a job in public relations, so that I could draw on my skills, but I'm also trying for project management, technical writing, and marketing jobs. I've even been applying at local auto parts stores, trying to land something to bring in a little money while I continue to search.

When applying to those posiitons they would be best suited using different resumes that speak to the specific knowledge and experiences and accomplishments that you have in the field of "Marketing" and PR and Project Management, etc. You should have 5 different resumes each speaking to "project management", Marketing, PR, Technical Writing. With the volume of applicants employers are going through, it would serve you best to keep you resume to 2 pages or less and keep the focus specifiy on the experience and knowledge that you have accordingly. Keep your resume to the last 10 - 15 years The hiring authorities want to read about the impact and contributions you could have for them. Speak of your accomplishments and succeses in a measurable fashion, using dollar amounts, percentages and communicate the impact or significance. Do not list your resume in terms of a job description. Be certain to include all of the modern "buzz words" and language appropriately used in the field. Before applying to a position, customize your resume to clearly match and speak to the required skills and accomplishments desired in the description.

You Are Not Alone These days, there are a lot of people looking for jobs. Almost everyone seems to follow the "rules" that we're taught in job search classes. However, searching for a job is a whole different process. When you apply for jobs, there are often A LOT of other applicants for the same job. Employers often seem to use "strange" tactics to narrow down the number of eligible applicats. By schools, skills, experience, etc. What I try and do is find something "unique" about my skills and try to emphasize that on my resume. My hope is that my skills will somehow give me an advantage over all the other applicants.

Oh I know that... but sometimes there needs to be some levity... too much doom and gloom all the time like we should be having a funeral for the economy.

That was extremely well put kudos to you for that analogy. Perhaps we should have a funeral for the economy so the new one can move on through. I will tell you, that it is a humbling experience for those of us across the US.

Very humbling... Many are experiencing the very "bottom" of their careers...I read sad stories everyday... but there are also lots of people out there with solid gumption and determination to survive. Economic Darwinism really.

You have to keep a postive attitude and perspective even when the sky is falling around you. At the end of the day, you can only control yourself in the midsts of a crisis and by staying calm and focused you will be able to navigate your way through the issues as you are faced with them.

It's very tough out here It's NOT you! There simply aren't any jobs out here and salaries have plummeted. I've been out since 1/30. I've had only one interview. My resume has been professional tweaked, as well as my interview skills. My former company supplied that service for a few months for us. Competition is absurd. Keep sending those resumes out and try not to get discouraged. Don't limit yourself to a 'new' career. It's hard to break into something new in this economy. Don't discount the types of positions you already know. Remember to check out usajobs.com. You will have an advantage with Veteran priority status. Good luck. Hopefully we will all be employed soon! P.S. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!!! I send packages (or used to when I had an income, I send letters and CDs and Books that I don't want anymore so I only pay postage) using www.anysoldier.com. Perhaps you would like to check it out and send letters to our brave soldiers. It will really lift your spirits. Contact me through CL if you have any questions.

Oh, and please don't disrespect Secretaries/ Admin Assistants. Most of us have BAs now, we work like slaves and get treated like shit. We also have a heck of a time trying to move up - no one will give us a chance.

Have you tried looking through your local VA... openings? www.usajobs.com has openings in my area of Madison WI that you receive points for prior service to help move you up the ladder in regards to eligibility for the position. I do realize you may want to "remove" yourself from the military atmosphere of a work scenario, but after a year of looking... Personally in January of 2010 I will be at the two year mark of looking and I do not have the military background to use to my advantage. I too, would like to say thank you for your service. Good luck in your search...

tapping your resources Being retired from the military offers perks that a lot of people dont know. Try tapping your resources through the VA and see if they can help perk up your resume or even help locate a position. Good Luck.
