I just ed HR about the 3-6 month contract She asked about my qualifications, told me the schedule and then asked me what my salary expectations were. Whenever I get that question in the initial screen I tend to deflect it back to interviewer and ask them, well what do you have in mind? Well this time she took offence and said, well that's why I asked you. Then I told well it depends on the opportunity, I would need to know more about the position beyond what I read in the ad, etc. She countered with, well if you're expecting $40,000 and we're offered $20,000, that won't work. I repeated again that it depends, then she continued got a pissy tone to her voice and finally said she would continue ing other candidates. Damn it. I should have said $20,000 would meet my needs (it's for 3-6 month contract right)? LOL. I then tried to close suggesting we set up a meeting but she declined, indicating she would prefer to keep ing other candidates. What a bitch. Couldn't control me, so rejected my application. However maybe I should have handled it better.

The question, in case you read it as a rant How do you handle the salary expectations question in the initial phone screen? I didn't want to undersell myself but neither give a range that was too high. Was hoping she would spit out a number so that I could agree with it, but it didn't happen.

Thanks for your input. FYI the was with an HR rep at the company itself, not an agency. She asked me to spit out a number, so this is where I stumbled.

Lamely, I Can Only Now Say Only U Know What you are worth and how you can low ball yourself. I am afraid I've walked myself into a dead end here based on my misunderstanding of how that went. I'm sorry to have wasted your time. Paul

oh well, its a lesson learned i'm more entry level myself so if someone says a price, i tend to go with it, but the older i get, the more i want to negotiate. unfortunately this isn't a good market for negotiation.
