resume question I'm trying to keep my resume short and succinct However, my situation is this: I've done a lot of volunteering/independent projects that are relevant to the job I want to get, but meanwhile I was working in jobs that weren't relevant (especially in the years just after finishing college) For example, I'd be working some hourly job like shop attendant, and in the evenings volunteering for a local institution in my field So on my resume, I need to put down the volunteering because it's relevant, but should I put down my "day job" as well? I kind of don't want to because it's not relevant to the job, because they were low level positions, and because I want to keep the resume short, but I'm also worried that it will look weird if I just have a long chain of volunteer work/internships and no real jobs on there - how was she supporting herself?

Easy to handle Include as your first line something like: "While finishing my degree in XYZ, I had several student-type jobs unrelated to my field of study. Details on these will be provided upon request. But I also did the following unpaid volunteer work--"

Or use a functional resume A functional resume highlights skills and achievements first. Page 2 or the end the resume gives specific data of chronological dates of employment. Remember that whether the employment is paid or unpaid is not really part of the resume. It is part of the application form but not the resume. You are not hiding anything especially is the chronological data overlap. You were working at two jobs and many people today do that. Again- to quote the other person on here- the objective of your resume is to get them to pick up the phone and you so only include information that supports that goal.

thank you I think I'll use something more along the lines you describe and leave the low level $ jobs to the application sheets

With metrics Yes Paul, I want to know in the first 5 seconds of reading what the person thinks he or she knows how to do with their accomplishments with it. Things like "increased production by 200% by adapting new system for organizing files" or whatever. While I also look at chronological history, I really want to know what the candidate thinks he or she is good at. Sometimes a person's best job is not the one held the longest. And since all people are different, I would rather start with the candidate's own words. You may not see this but have a good weekend!

i would never trust a functional resume. too much of a risk that the reader will be put-off by this less common format.

Do you ever read books w/o indexes? Chronological can be dull and boring. Plus the application which is almost always required legally is designed to list everything in chronological order. The resume is a marketing piece. Pick how you want to market yourself.
