    Wow. Huge ass-unption and certainly doesn't fit me. Some of us have sense enough to have saved for the rough times and to be frugal when the money is not flowing. I still haven't touched my savings, which are far larger than that + house and other assets. "Most of" is a pretty sweeping generalization, probably based on a few people saying they were down to rock bottom. - You've said you were at one point, too, Panda.

    good question as this impacts a lot of people Housing foreclosure is high. A friend I know foreclosed on a condo. Condo mortgage rates could be equal to or slightly higher than apt rates. Add the condo fee and property taxes and insurance. You risk having unruly neighbors or deadbeats who rent out their units. Condos don't appreciate hardly at all. So, is it worth it to invest in a condo and be tied to a 30-yr mortage? You could rent an apt a nice new one with new fixtures, free maintenance, one monthly fee, and have the same ammenities as a condo and not be strapped at 30-yrs fixed. A home is obviously different. Scroll down within this link: In Arizona the weekly unemployment is $240, that is $960/month. In Florida the weekly unemployment is $275. The most you can collect would be $1,100 per month. Housing foreclosure is very high in both of those states. After exhausting your savings, and living on UE while looking for work that pays more than that, foreclosures will continue to rise if there is no job creation. My question: Does that mean it will be harder for people who rent to get back to work since employers will hire the homeowners instead because they pay taxes to the community and hiring them will reduce foreclosures?

    I've had a couple of employers ask me during an interview or screening whether I was paying a mortgage. I looked at one of those as an actual empathy thing. Of course I said yes, and that I hadn't lost the house, yet. That didn't get me the job out of sympathy, of course.

    It's not relevant. Not sure if it breaks any laws, but asking a candidate if they own or rent is part of Managment 101's list of things to stay away from in an interview.

    Right, but those questions don't touch on your financial status. I don't know what law it breaks, but asking someone if they rent or own isn't a legal interview question.

    Falls under Title VII... Hiring Process What kinds of questions should be avoided during the application process? A good rule of thumb is to keep questions job related. Federal and State laws prohibit certain questions that elicit information about age (date of birth), sex, race, color, religion, national origin, disability and ancestry. An employer is prohibited from asking about medical history or workers’ compensation on the application or during interviews. Other suspect inquires include asking about marital status, spouses name, number or children, childcare provisions, whether rent or own a home, arrest records, and citizenship. You can offer employment contingent upon passing an employee physical (assuming all employees must submit to the physical). Likewise, you may get Affirmative Action information once an employee is hired. Employers should also keep in mind that if, in the course of a physical exam, medical information revealed must be kept separate from an employees personnel file. The Division has published brochures/booklets and handouts on this matter. Please feel free to contact us for this information.

    pardon me. not from a blog, but this is the relevant paragraph from your site: "What are some examples of unlawful practices? It is unlawful for an employer to refuse to hire a person, to discharge or lay off an employee, harass or to treat persons differently in the terms and conditions of employment because of race, color, creed, religion, sex, national origin, ancestry, or disability. Age is also prohibited under federal law." Nothing about questions, and certainly nothing about financially-related questions.

    My info. wasn't from some blog it was on some South Dakota state EEOC or labor board site (official state government site). Your right, there is nothing in the Title VII law that explicitly states that you can't ask X or Y, but the guidiance is to stay away from certain areas that might get an employer into trouble. Race, color, creed, religion, sex, national origin, ancestry, disability or age aren't the only areas you can't touch on; sorry, shouldn't touch on. You can't ask if someone has children, if they are married, you get the point. I guess you could ask these questions but it opens you or your company up for legal problems. Shit, just google "things you can't ask in an interview". If it gets you to mellow out, I'll admit that asking if you own or rent might not be illegal, but ill advised.

    Okay, poor choice of words, but the point is still the same. There are certain questions/areas you should touch on in an interview. You can ask these questions, but shouldn't. You are right, there is no law that says you can't ask X or Y, but if you go down that path you just open yourself or your company up to litigation.
