Would you hire me?(semi-rhetorical) I have seven years experience as a carpentry sergeant in the army, have worked in office settings and warehouses, been a machine operator, a sub contractor, a field support specialist, I have plenty of computer experience in just about any program that is relevant, a US citizen and 27 years old. Would you hire me?

Who I would hire is the person with the most experience in what I was looking for. So if you want warehouse work, your resume needs to reflect strength there, and minimize the rest. If you want an office assistant position, there's a completely different format for your resume -- one with strengths listed in office skills and, in my case, telephone customer service. Being a jack of all trades is okay, so long as the resume you use shows focus in one area or another.

List the programs If you claim to know "just about any" program without listing them, it sounds like you are blowing hot air.

If U Just ETS'd U Need 2 Move UR Thinking 4ward Did you just ETS? You probably need to civilianize your resume; most of the people who get out of the military who are not 0-3 and above have resumes that do not reflect what civilians want to see. Also, keeping this economy in mind, you need to focus on what kind of job/career path you want or you will find yourself taking one job after another. Your computer experience may or may not match what the civilians are doing so that needs to be looked at. Frankly, you are very close to being 'just another laborer' if you don't focus. You may easily benefit from going back to school while you are still young and get a degree in something worthwhile. Just 'getting hired' is not the target here, you know. At least, it should not be your target because you will find yourself being replaced or beat out by cheap labor if you don't play your cards right. Anyone 'might' hire you but for how much money and with what type of long term view? You may be only filling a spot or you may be someone to be groomed for long term investment by the company. You need to think this out. It may be that the sooner you move from labor intensive jobs to things like Logistics and Supply Chain the better off you will be. As it stands now, you sound like you could be a warehouse manager-to-be and not much more. Paul RVN '70-'71

We have been doing a lot of entry level machine operators. As long as candidates can pass the aptitude tests given by our clients there is a good chance that they can start entry level. But these positions only start out around $10 - $12 per hour. I try harder to get the guys in gals previously in uniform a seat at the front due to my own gratitude, but I think I might be the exception instead of the norm in this scenario. Its hard to line up the military experience with the civilian stuff, even the experience pertaining to Aerospace Mechanics, Electronics, Heavy Machinery Mechanics, and so on. But it doesn't stop me from trying.

I'm Not Discounting You, Patt. However, Many people in the service are used to leading a squad or platoon. Meaning they have either supervisory or managerial experience and do not want to lose the momentum by taking an hourly job that does not include management duties. So I was anticipating this by suggesting Morph do no short term thinking or he will be taking, as I said, one job after another. All non-exempt. A sad ending to lost potential. Not to say that he can't start by running a lathe, move up to running three machines, then move again to managing someone who in turn is running three machines and then eventually becoming a shop manager. But that 'would you hire me' stuff is the wrong question. Anyone will hire anyone. But he needs to work his plan much like a military strip map- working the plan backwards so he has a goal in mind that will sustain him over the long term. I'm 'just' being cautious, that's all. pf

I did actually just get laid of in June from an outfit where I was running two somewhat antiquated lathes, and basiy put in charge of my section when the lead person was not there. I tried to shine my brightest, just like the Army taught me, but there was a layoff; the first one in forty years of business for that company. I do have skills, and am adaptable to just about any situation, whether it be working in a meat locker or production work or even graphics. Graphics is where i am focusing my attention now, but i am still open to anything, because trying to survive on unemployment is a futile endeavor.
