Who is an over 50 highly qualified person? I saw something on tv the other day that made me think. There was a documentory showing the problems of highly qualified individuals looking for work and comming up against brick walls, thinking they were never ever going to be re-hired and generally feeling depressed and forgotten, yet knowing they were capable of great things.........and suddenly a light bulb went on. These people were from very diversified employment areas. From unqualified labourers all the way up to CEOS and all of them at a loss and I suddenly thought if only they could meet each other on a friendship bases, get to know each other, find people they liked within the group and networked between themselves and THEN......say to heck with employers!!!!!! Pool their resources and skills, and start up businesses themselves using the skills within the group and share the profits! I would love to start a coffee club like this ....a sharing of ideas and interests and skills and before you know it you could have all kinds of business starting up! Has this already been done? If so, someone please let me know where so I can join.! If not .....let me know what you think and maybe we can all get something going!!!

Hummmmmmmmmmmmmm Good idea yet I thought about it many times already and there is a catch to it. At one time I belonged to the chambers of commerce. The reason people join those things is mainly for networking and meeting new people. I paid a few hundred dollars for membership. Then I found out very fast that everyone in the world comes to your table not to help you, but to pick your mind. Every single person wanted to know about me, my business, who I know and so on. Yet no ever gave me any useful information ever. Also the same thing happens at other networking meetings that I attended. In the end it's very easy to see that the whole world just loves to know who you know and what you do so they can do the same thing. My advice is if you know something never ever tell anyone. I'm still open now it's your turn :) I know evey one and did every thing so tell me why I should talk?

oh heck who needs sleep anyway You make some interesting points but Im wondering if maybe Im not getting my point over correctly. When I made that original post I was aware of the job clubs and networking groups out there all over the place and have even attended a couple but they were of no value to me. I must admit I have never been to a Chamber of Commerce function, nor will I ever attend one in the future, My perception of them was that they were like a cocktail party set up for people already involved in business or about to be set up in a business and the whole purpose was to appear to be a "somebody" in order to gain acceptance into the business world, not by who you are but by what you are and who you know.......all very superficial to me. Im thinking of an atmosphere where a person can escape from the stresses of job searching, the stresses of feeling like one will never find a job ever again or the financial stresses that might have accompanied the job loss. A relaxed, coffee shop atmosphere where people show up in casual attire that does not indicate one way or another what they are. Where people can get to know them for who they are rather than what they are and where people dont care who that person knows. Where the focus is friendship, and perhaps newfound shared interests. Where the people showing up know that everyone around them is in the same boat as they are and that they arent alone. Where people can share their job searching stories. Im not sure that as you say, theres a catch to it. I think it has to have a purpose and a focus. I think the people that attend the Chamber of commerce meetings go with the proverbial "Life is all about me" attitude "what can all these people do to help me" I think the purpose and focus has to change 180 degrees. People need to show up with the "its all about you" attitude.."I know what your going through so what can I do to help"

sleepwalking If everyones purpose is to be there to help you, how can a person not ever find useful information. So as I said before, you need to talk because people need to hear. What do you hope to gain by not telling people what you know and what you do? What you do can be summed up in a title thats all they need to know. In a situation where people decide to pool their knowledge and expertise they shouldnt assume to be in competition with each other. They shouldnt have to hide what they are or who they are. I think the basis and focus of the gathering should be honesty, openness, sincerity, humility, humbleness, empathy and a plethora of other atributes.

what a great looking site! Just one problem, Im looking for an escape from the riggers of job searching, resume organization, browsing job sites, filtering the sincere from the insincere, the real from the unreal, the login and registering over and over again. Im not sure Im up to organizing anything else at this point. It looks like a really interesting site though, Ill check it out further and maybe its not as involved as I think it is. Thanks!

another good looking site Thanks for posting the site. I have bookmarked it as I know it can probably be very helpful.....to executives or wannabes The vision I have expressed in this thread however isnt for Executives alone, it isnt for White collar workers alone, it isnt for menial workers alone.....its for all of them together. The emphasis for now is a localized group but if it works, who knows maybe we can be mentors for others Thanks

Let's get it together As a 62 year old with 43 years of supervisory and managerial experience in the trucking industry I would love to help mcreate a consulting firm with various inputs and options. If we can attract a few qualified people from various backgrounds, I am sure the licensing and starup fees would be minimal. This would be especially good giving that we may come from different areas of the country.

in a nice way By highly qualified I dont necessarily mean with written qualifications. If you believe you are experienced enough in what you do thats great to. I for one do Bookkeeping or Accounting, I was one of those people working in it from the age of 20 on and listened to people when they said "A college degree is no big deal....experience counts for more" I believed them and didnt go for a degree. Now I am surrounded by people whos parents insisted that college and university WAS necessary and employers that look at you like your from mars if you say you have only experience. I chose bookkeeping and accounting at the time because I knew that there isnt a business out there that doesnt need it...what company do you know of that can get by without someone to keep the books.
