Office politics; Need advice I just got a job offer today, but it's for a 1 week trial period to see if I'll fit in. I am a 50 yo man. I'll be the Dept Manager of 3 late 20s women who were moved into the dept as it grew. One of them was passed over for this job and I was hired instead, because of my industry experience. I have been forewarned by the boss that they will sabotage and withhold information/ make it difficult for me because they all wanted her for this job. I did not meet the one who was passed over, but of the other 2, one is a Type A (aggressive) and the other is a Type B (passive). Any advice how I go into this situation? Should I not discuss this situation with them, or bring it up after a few days and explain that I understand their resentment, but it was not my doing? Any angles on approaching this would be helpful. How do I address the instance when I see they are misguiding me (openly address it, or work around it?) I don't think playing hardball is the long-term solution, but I need to 'manage' them. Trying to get some ammunition before I start on Monday.

What makes you qualified to be the Department Manager? It sure can't be your people skills. (Pssst! I think this forum talks about people like you all the time. I would pass on that job and not because you are going to be working with a harem of bitches, but because your boss KNOWS there are a harem of bitches and seems to tolerate that behavior. Obviously he has no backbone whatsoever and is going to allow the harem of bitches to undermine you at every opportunity and just shrug his shoulders over it. It is a nightmare waiting to happen. Run!

    ^^^I'm with you One week? Just enough time to temporarily screw up your UI? None of them like you before you're in the door! If the OP decides to go for it - LOL, I agree with Hookers&Blow as well...get as chummy with them as possy. No hardball...be Mr. Hardluck Story to gain their sympathies. If OP is 'lucky' enough to be around longer than a week, I'd work on getting rid of these 3 asap...sounds like they've got the company in a stranglehold for control.

    1getreal, Let Me Say, Please: Instead of being a wimp, let us suggest the job needs to be filled. Let's make believe the job requires someone who has management skills and can overcome the hostilities that are coming this guy's way. Can you see that? Can you see that someone will be taking this job? Do you lack the management skills necessary to overcome the challenges associated with this job? It sounds as though you not only don't have the management skills to do this job, you can't imagine anyone having the relevant skills to be successful in this scenario. ......... Now, imagine some other place with a different set of challenges. Do you automatiy suggest no one take the job in this instance? Or is it possible someone has the skills to deal with this second situation? If so, then perhaps there is someone who can and has managed adverse employee environments and can take their experience and use them in the first (8tm's situation) scenario. To rule out the job because you cannot see yourself or anyone you know/know of doing the job does not erase the fact there are successful managers who can deal with 8tm's situation. I think it is a mistake to take your limited perception and use that as a guideline for the next person. For your information, what 8tm has described is not exactly a unique situation. It would be a shame if we all ran away from a challenge just because a bystander (you) does not perceive how to create change management in a hostile work place. As I said, that you cannot perceive how to handle this situation does not mean it is not doable. You have not allowed for what a competent manager can do in terms of turning around the staffs' attitude and working with 'that gutless' "boss" in order to bring sanity to a situation that as I have said, is not exactly unique. What Dirty Harry said applies exactly to you but does not apply equally: "A man's got to know his limitations" Now, to me, it is clear 8tm is sorely lacking in management skills and should not take this job but it is not clear that no one should. Just 8tm. ?

    it's a cliche but what the hell You've heard the acronym WIIFM right? (What's In It For Me?) Use it to show the bitches what they can learn from you about the industry. Assuming they give a shit about furthering their careers. If you can mentor them without being the least bit condescending you might have a chance.

    the way I see it........ you've got 2 choices..... first, go in like a sheep to slaughter and try to make friendly with them and win them over. Problem is if they are a bunch of bitches, you're going to turned into their bitch from here on out if you get to keep the job......not something I would be willing to do. Second, go in and immediately a department meeting. Explain to them you understand their feelings about their friend, but the was made by the higher ups and for what's worth, that's the way it is. I would also explain that you have been warned that they may try to undermine you with disinformation and such. I would add that you plan on treating them as professionals and expect the same from them and that any attempts to undermine or cause confusion will be reported up the ladder. Then if you last beyond the first week, you can try to build better relations. If you don't last beyond the week, chances are you're better off........but there is the thing with your UI. How good do you feel about your chances of succeeding with a bitch harem? Personally, I'm with getreal.....I'd pass, it just depends on how bad off you are now.

    Pass it up and here's why a WEEK trial period in THIS situation? Oh puhlease. They are using you They hope that your actually starting will give the one they passed over the impetus to resign and move on and then they'll be free to bump you and put in whoever they have lined up for the position for real.
