My situation is bad. Here is a summary. I used to be very wealthy. I mean that in every sense of the word. For various reasons, I have lost all of my money (divorce, market losses over the years, lack of income, poker, people screwing me and so on). I did not need to work and I started a business. However, I soon realized that business ownershio is not my cup of me and I closed the business down. My background is largely I.T. & marketing. The last I had a regular income was in 2003. The last I had a paying assignment was in 2005. I have been unable to find work since. However, I have not tried in full measure in the years ***. I have had family issues to deal with that had me going abroad for long stretches. No one can hold a regular job while doing that. My need for frequent trips abroad has since stopped. I have tried hard to get a job in *** but to no avail. I have no money left and no assets left to raise money ( I have sold my home, cashed out my IRA's etc - all for living expenses). Also, my family & friend support structure is poor(at least financially). The state that I live in is a ghetto state. It seems to me that Indians hire Indians, Whites hire whites, Asians hire asians etc. The number of times that I have filled out applications and not received responses is immense (for minimum wage jobs). I have not paid my rent in many months and expect to be evicted soon. All I have is a dilapidated car, an old toshiba laptop and some furniture. Even looking for a job needs money and I have just about nothing left. (The reason that I have access to the Internet now is that I found an unsecured network nearby). All I want now is to be able to earn enough to take of myself. Yet, I cannot find a job no matter what. I am in my forties. Applying for public assistance is a non issue. First of all, I don't want to do it and secondly - since I am a single male, I don't think it really makes a difference. CONTINUED in NEXT POST.

Previous post continued All the extended unemployment does not make a difference to me since one needs to have an application after 2006 for it me to be eligible. The few times I manage to talk to people I know, I end up getting spoken down to or worse, get yelled at (for losing all my wealth. As if I do not already know that I have been immensely gullible and stupid). For what it is worth, I consider myself to be scrupulously honest (I can provide many instances of this - even when very large sums of monies are involved). Some of this reflects in my stubbornness to not doctor my resume, to tell people exactly what the truth is when they ask a question etc. I am not sure if this is hurting my ability to get a job. I consider myself to be strong & tough mentally though. Without being dramatic, I can tell you that my situation is probably worse than people on the street or people ing suicide hotlines (just to clarify - I have no suicidal intentions. I am merely providing a description of where I stand). What do I do ? How do I get a job that pays money - soon ?

That is good advice I am trying to help FSBO's organize open houses. It is so damn difficult to get paid. Plus, you need to have some money to spend on signs, vinyl stickers etc. Regarding the specific services you mentioned - you make a lot of sense. However, I have not been very lucky when I ask people to provide services like running errands etc. One factor may be most of the people who request such services just happen to be white and I don't happen to be one. As such, I guess they are wary. I remember at least a couple of instances where I know I was one of the first to in for ads for elderly people needing some help. They always said they already hired someone after hearing my voice. (I am not blaming them. I am just saying that is how things are).

you know what, if you would spend... as much time looking as you do bitching, you whould have already found a job! Be pro-active. Find a sector you want to be in and rather than waiting for the companies to post openings, search out their email address and send them your Resume'. I have dont that and have gotten 3 interviews.

i am happy for you. I will also think about your suggestion about applying to companies that don;t post resumes (though I did try a version of this some time ago to no avail. I found out the clients of each office building in nearby towns and approached many of them. None of them were hiring at that time). While you are entitled to your opinion that "I am bitching" - I don't think I am. I know for a fact that normal people get worked up over things that I never even flinch about. I spend almost all of the money that I am able to generate on looking for jobs (print outs, cell phone bills, gas). This is big. All the time that is needed as well. Needless to say, I have time on my hands - especially on nights like this since I can's sleep & there is no TV/reading material/DVD's at my place.

While I feel for your sitatuion I do have to say that your situation is not worse than that of others. If you would take some time and read this forum (ignoring the spam posts of course) you will note that many people on here are in very similar situations. There are many people out looking for work right now. In case you haven't heard unemployment is on the rise. Again, if you take some time and read this forum you will realize there are people on here that have been out of work over a year and are also not able to find work - of any kind. So pretty much all you can do is revamp your resume and make sure it is working for you. If you are not sure you can post it on here - deleting all personal inforamtion - and have it critiqued. Best to do it in the morning though. You then want to just start applying for jobs knowing full well that you will not receive a response from most of them. Go down to the local shopping malls - many stores are hiring right now for the holidays. Again I feel for you but I'm sorry to tell you that frankly you are no different than millions of others out there right now. You just have to do the best you can and keep positive.

I agree that you are no worse off than others on the street or anyone else who is close to having nothing. As the OP stated update your resume and get out there, but in the meantime see if you can work at a shelter, food bank etc. to use your expertise from your past career and statue. It may be a volunteer position but I am sure you will find that you are better off then others. Good luck!

Good idea to do volunteer work... for a couple reasons. 1. I just makes a person feel better - feel needed. 2. It gets you out doing something constructive 3. It helps build that social network you state you no longer have. 4. Who knows - it could lead to a job.

Do U have dual citizenship? What country? "Gullible and stupid" in losing your financial wealth on top of being divorced does not bode well with some employers for obvious reasons. I, for one, appreciate your brutal honesty but, will a potential employer? Spill your beans after you get a job. If you have dual citizenship elsewhere, I would leave. For one thing, your English is excellent - which is a huge plus in another country. Are you able to farm out your IT knowledge/talent? Can you be a consultant? You haven't paid rent - so, you're on borrowed time. Do you have any options? I think this should be your primary concern. There are groups out there that can help you with your bills.

Answers I don't tell the story about losing everything to employers. Of course not. However, I have gaps in my resume. When asked, I explain them for what they are (i.e. could not keep a full time job because of my visits abroad, the visits abroad were because my parents were old & I had to visit them, I am not cut out to be a business person etc etc). I am not a dual citizen. I am a naturalized US citizen. My reaction to leaving the US to go back to where I am from is this - it doesn't really change things and more to the point, I don't have enough money to get to the Philly airport, let alone be able to buy an international plane ticket.

one quick thing Getting an IT job is difficult. My IT skills are real (even if I say so myself). But the way the process seems to work is absolutely bizarre. I don't want to get started on a rant about this. I may never stop :-)

Your English is excellent You write better than most. Companies these days need to have an active presence in social media (LinkedIn, Twitter, blogs, etc.). If being a writer appeals to you, ditch the resume bit and start a portfolio. Your portfolio will contain a PowerPoint presentation of at least 10 steps of instructions, an example of poorly written instructions or description of something that you've edited and improved upon and, possibly, a bit of creative writing/marketing. You will point out that you have experience with technical writing, press releases (your own) and creating contracts. You are savvy with social networking, active on blogs and will present that positive spin on the www that every company needs. When it comes to writing gigs, companies look for experience. Maybe you can find something of interest on iFreelance?
