Burned out I've been unemployed for over a year now. I've gone thru all the typical depression/stress-related modes but, I've now hit major burn-out that's effecting my job search. I'm wondering if any of you are experiencing this? Completing on-line forms, writing cover letters, etc. isn't just dull work any more; its agonizing. I don't know how to snap out of it --- and, I need a hug. I never thought I'd turn into one of those peeps who just gives up. (I can't afford to give up and don't want to either!) Today, I'm addressing one OP's post about hating their boring, mindless job and thinking that it must be better than looking for one. My hopes were temporarily raised when I heard news of peeps getting interviews, backs and jobs. But, when I visited some sites today, I got a different opinion about whether there's a bit of reprieve from all of the gloom. This is one of the worst days I've seen - eva - for job searching. Everything is a scam and no one is hiring (it seems). A couple company sites had a message that they're experiencing "heavy volume" and ask that I go away. Sigh I think the burn-out is effecting how productive I am. Last week, I prolly sent out 10 resumes, max. I'm looking into taking some classes. This makes me feel a bit more hopeful as it will give me the feeling of working towards something. I enjoy learning new things but, I still feel gloomy about how much it will help me. I'm not looking for something else to do or want a PT job just to give me someplace to go. I'm downright despondent when I think about the future of the USA. What I need is an attitude adjustment...or Prozac. Don't have any Prozacs. :0( I'm getting excersize, taking vitamins, keeping my place tidy and whatever so that I don't slip into deep dispair. I'm not the type who will read a self-help book. But, my misery does love your company. If you have anything to share, commisserate with what I'm going through, good economic news or some advice, I'd like to hear it. Thanks for your help.

Didn't see your post I just posted something similar to yours. At least you're exercising, taking vitamins and keeping your place tidy. I'm not even doing that. Where in the Bay Area are you?

Just read your's 2. SF. Hey Dire, at least you're seeing positions open. I win this round of Pity-Party: Seems like there are more opportunities for those with specific skills (a trade), those on the tippy-top or rock bottom of the food chain. I was going to suggest taking walks for you. Even a little 5-10 minute walk around the block might help.

I'm in the city just south of you I look everyday, all day long but that doesn't mean I respond right away to the posting. Lately, I've been letting them pile up then send in my resume and cover letter. Saturday, I had to force myself to sit down and apply to 3 ads. I'm on the FED ED extension and I have to document a minimum of 3 per week. I had 3 more but saved them for today. It's 4:45 and I still haven't done anything with them. I keep telling myself that I'll do the Couch to 5K around Lake Merced. And have I started it? NOOOOOOO. Like I said in my posting the weather has been absolutely beautiful and that isn't even motivating me.

Ur funny! LOL - just read this post. Funny peeps are the best! Yeah, I'm with you on my uncanny lack of productivity! I don't understand it: How can I be multitasking in front of my 'puter all day and get so little done? Today's PHFFFFFTTT!!!! occured after getting 4 pop up windows (4!) to apply for a spot with Edward Jones. My password didn't work, resent, re-entered...and the site was down! Ah!

Chin up FD! I'd give you that hug if I were closer. I think we all could use a hug. I found the same thing today. I'm thinking we won't see as many ads though the holidays, but don't give up. Just remember you're not alone. I will send you some of my optimism. I keep you and the rest of the JOFO crew in my thoughts each day. Strangely it helps when I feel like the lone ranger.

LOL! For the past few weeks, it seems like lots of peeps are getting interviews, etc. Then, I crack open Indeed and BOO! Scary stuff... Thank you for your sweet e-mail. You rock.

you are doing more than me... sometimes, i dont want to get out of bed and i sleep all day-sign of depression. I just think its going to be really slow until the new year, so you gots to hang in there companies will have to start hiring again soon because when they cut the fat, they cut into the muscle and downsized way too much out of fear.

Sleeping Thank you for mentioning this, CL! Yes, my usual drastic self has had the burning desire to take naps? I'm usually bouncing off the walls. My caffiene intake... Its oozing out of my pores yet, I'm craving sleep. I'm encouraged to read what you had to say about companies cutting back. It seems like they just went nuts with the chopping block in the past few months. Some of those who have not been laid off must be losing sleep because they're trying to pick up the slack, afraid to in sick for work, afraid they'll be next, afraid to take their vacations, etc. I need to learn how to chill out and give myself a break. Okay, I'll try to perk up and just realize that its prolly going to get really bad over the next few weeks. Thanks for your post. Its helped.

((((hugs))))) I know how you feel. I get those days. You are doing all the right things. The only thing I can say is that remember the sun still shines, puppies and kittens are born everyday :) Make sure to deliberately take your mind off the job search/situation EVERYDAY for a couple of hours, maybe even twice per day. Find something that really interests you. Something really different. Some sort of intellectual pursuit. Study something that INTERESTS you, not something that is valuable to your job pursuit. Keep posting; I believe venting helps. Good Luck!!

Santa Monica is really far south Hi! Yeah, SM is waaayyy on down there. Can't you tell by the beach? LOL! When's the last time you saw sun on Sunset, North Beach or Great Beach? I'm a very active person --- I have been all my life. Plus, I don't eat like an American so, I don't have a weight problem. I'm blessed with a gargantuan lab who likes extreme excersize and cries and wines if he doesn't get it. He wimpers and when I look at him, he looks out the window. LOL. He does the same thing with doggie treats. This goes on until he gets whatever it is he wants. [:=p I feel very, very sorry for obese peeps. Really, I don't think fat jokes are funny or anything. I guess you've pointed out that I have something to be thankful for.

I gave up too I was laid off a year ago October, and worked a part time job from July to October this year. After getting let go from that job I haven't gotten my unemployment. I have to have a telephone interview to see if I still get my benefits. That interview is supposed to be tomorrow. I've been taking an HTML class this semester and have signed up for two classes next semester. CSS and Web site management. At least I have some sort of a schedule. I've also been gardening my brains out, and I took up canning (Christmas gifts). I think I'm on the last stage of grief "acceptance". Got there with out any Prozac, can't go to the doctor with no money and no insurance. My husband was laid off last Christmas eve, and started working nights two months ago. Tonight during dinner he said "I hate my job", he doesn't really hate his job, he hates working nights. I told him, unsympathetiy, "at least you have a job". Probably none of this has cheered you up, but at least you know you have company.

FD I know the feeling. I can imagine how bad things have gotten in CA due to the numbers of CA tags I see here. I've been telling myself for the last five years things will get better. Then I look at the unemployment rate over the last two years. The depression is tough and the Christmas season frankly doesnt make it any better. Stay close to your family. I find that spacing out my job search over the day helps. I at least have my VA group to vent on (boy are they gonna get an earfull /sarc). Keep your chin up.

Good that you are taking care of the body Now you need to take care of the mind. Don't forget that you cannot spend 24/7 on the job search. Be certain to take some "me time" out of every day - even if it's only 1/2 hour - just to spend time with your own thoughts and feelings or the TV. Having said that, the length of time you've been looking for work makes one wonder if you are going about it in the "right" way for today's world. Maybe take some time off from the search to research HOW to do the search in this economy. Take advantage of free services to build your perfect resume and cover letter, learn the advantages of connections (are you on LinkedIn?), and create a marketing plan for yourself.
